The Gatehouse
The
Gatehouse, is located somewhat east of the original
asylum grounds, on
At one time, the Gatehouse was occupied by the Assistant
Superintendent of the asylum, Dr. Carson.
After the asylum closed, the building suffered a rather
"shady" existence. The house was boarded up and abandoned for
over 30 years. It was typically
frequented by drug users, and commonly referred to as a
"crack-house", as often occurs with abandoned buildings.
Thankfully, in 1998, with the inspiration of Arthur Raymond
Lockhart, support from a registered charitable organization and help from over
400 community volunteers, the building was renovated and turned into a centre
to provide support to abused children, their families, and adult
survivors. For more information, please check out their website: The Gatehouse.

way to not only restore and preserve this historical building, but to also
provide a viable and important community service!)
