The aim of the New Toronto Historical Society is to preserve and promote the history of the Town of New Toronto.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of another New Toronto resident, Beverley Baxter.  Beverley was the daughter of Dick Baxter, whose memoriam is posted on our Residents page.  Beverley’s grandfather, Herbert Baxter, was a local contractor in New Toronto, and built several of the houses in the area.  Beverley’s obituary, copied below, is posted in the Toronto Star:

 

BAXTER, Beverley - Peacefully with family by her side on Monday, April 28, 2008. Predeceased by her parents Dick and Villa. Fondly remembered by her brothers Rick (Jane) and John (Carole). She will be missed by her niece Lindsey (Kyle) and nephews Peter (Kristie), Brian (Keri), Michael (Danielle), great-nieces Sienna and Lilah and many special friends. Family and friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (between Islington and Kipling Aves., at 14th St., 416-259-3705) on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Service will follow in the Chapel at 12 p.m. Interment Springcreek Cemetery. Donations may be made to St. Margaret's Anglican Parish, New Toronto. Messages of Condolence may be placed at www.RidleyFuneralHome.com.

 

 

 

 

We are saddened to learn of the passing of a long time New Toronto resident, Irene Hooey Leslie.  Her obituary, as follows, is published on The Toronto Star Classifieds website. Please feel free to visit the site to sign or view the guestbook.  Our condolences to Irene’s family.

 

LESLIE, Eunice Irene (Hooey)  On April 15, 2008, in her 92nd year, Irene Leslie passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC. Irene, beloved and loving wife of Walter (1980), is mourned by her children Joan Foss (Arthur), Lynda Grant of Victoria and Edward (Anne) of NB. Devoted Gramma of Lindsay (Corey Jessup) and Megan Foss and Nikolas and Lorissa Leslie. Delighted Gramma-Great of Caitlin and Jonathan Jessup. Irene was a special chosen Gramma of the Giraudy Family. Irene and Walter were long time members of the New Toronto community and Century United Church. In 1999, Irene moved to Victoria and entered into its church and seniors community but her heart belonged to Toronto. Irene is survived by her sisters Iris Adams, Jean Sedge, Madeline West, her sister-in-law Margaret Hooey in ON and her brother Gerald (Margaret) in SK. She was predeceased by her sister Rena Martin and brothers Irwin, Roy, Allan and Donald. Irene will be lovingly remembered by her family and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends in Toronto and Victoria. Donations in Irene's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. A service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.

This is the first book to investigate the complex, interior life of a single city – the ordinary and extraordinary places where Torontonians lived, worked, shopped and performed the rituals of daily life.  Interior photographs are rare.  Not many were taken; and fewer have survived.

This will also be the evening that we hold our Annual General Meeting.
