New Toronto Historical Society

Speaker: Derek Boles on Toronto's Built Railway Heritage:

The Architecture of the Age of Rail Over 200 images will be used to explore the history of railway architecture in Toronto, from the magnificent Union Station to the lowly crossing shanty that was recently restored at the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre. This fast-paced presentation will also explore suburban passenger stations, express buildings, downtown ticket offices, and both the CNR Spadina and CPR John Street roundhouses. A brief overview will also be provided of the current stage of redevelopment at Union Station and the opening of the TRHC in the summer of 2010.

 

Biography

Derek Boles is one of the founding members of the Toronto Railway Historical Association and has written and lectured extensively on Toronto's railway history. He coordinates the annual Doors Open event at Union Station and leads popular monthly tours of the station. He is on the board of Heritage Toronto and is the chair of the Union Station Revitalization Public Advisory Group. Derek is also the chief historian for the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre and his book, “Toronto’s Railway Heritage” was published by Arcadia Publishing in 2009.
